This quote from the book “Boundaries” explains so very much. The minute a dysfunctional family member reenters your life, it’s like automatic pilot gets switched on with us, and the self we carefully nurtured into a stronger, more courageous, positive person dissipates. Bother!

It does take time and a whole lot of shifting and changing and being determined to no longer cater to the family dynamics to break free, but it is doable. Our first step is to have the courage to learn to say “no” to what does not sit right with us in our family of origin setting. It can be something as simple as having a different opinion to offer, that you’ve never, ever spoken up about, to revealing personal truths about your life the family does not know.

Either way, be brave, live courageously and breathe freedom!

The hardest part is the first breath in before you speak, after that, no matter which way the cards fall, you’re going to feel better within yourself. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day and learning to say no takes time. Just make sure you take the time to learn.

And if all else fails buy, read and incorporate the book Boundaries by Cloud & Townsend into your day to day life.
